Amidst the turmoil of displacement, UNFPA is working tirelessly to provide a semblance of normalcy and dignity to young refugee girls arriving in south western, Uganda. Through the distribution of over 1,500 dignity kits to new arrivals from Sudan in Kiryandongo, UNFPA and its partners are addressing the immediate and often overlooked needs of these vulnerable girls.

These kits, containing essential items like soap, sanitary pads, and underwear, go beyond mere physical comfort. They empower girls to maintain their hygiene and privacy, restoring a sense of self-respect and control in a chaotic and unfamiliar environment.

The impact of these kits extends beyond the tangible. They offer a powerful message of solidarity and support, reminding these girls that they are not alone and that their well-being matters. The kits also provide a foundation for building resilience, enabling girls to navigate the challenges of displacement with greater confidence and dignity.

While these efforts are commendable, the need remains immense. Countless more girls and women continue to arrive in refugee settlements in the West Nile and Southwestern region, seeking refuge from conflict and hardship. In 2024 alone, Uganda registered  87,098 new arriving refugees of whom 33,556 are from South- Sudan and Settled in Kiryandongo. UNFPA supported the placement of two midwives at Panyandoli Health Center II to map most at-risk  women and girls. Every dignity kit distributed represents a beacon of hope, a chance to restore dignity and empower these young girls to reclaim their lives.

UNFPA's work is made possible through the generous contributions of the donors to the UNFPA Emergency Fund. And yet, continued support is vital to sustain and expand these critical interventions. We urge all stakeholders to join us in this endeavor to ensure that every refugee girl in Uganda receives the support she needs to thrive and build a brighter future.

The dignity kits may be small in size, but their impact is immeasurable. They are a tangible reminder that even in the darkest of times, hope and compassion can prevail. Let us continue to stand with these girls, providing them with the tools they need to not only survive but to flourish.
