On the eve of the international day of the girl child a panel of experts from UNICEF and ministry of gender joined UNFPA to dialogue with selected social media experts in the country and stakeholders.
On table was the issue of early marriage and teenage pregnancy in the country. The panelists discussed the social and health consequences of child marriage in addition to the legislative framework in place by government to tackle this vice.
Child brides are more at risk of domestic violence and face a higher risk of health complications during child birth. Testimonies and experiences were shared, with a call for an integrated approach to sensitive all involved. Contributors called for national campaigns to raise awareness on this issue, birth registrations to help immediately identify child brides and implementation of legislation against the perpetrators.
