Soroti, Uganda – 12 August: UNFPA Uganda, in collaboration with the Government of Uganda and other partners, commemorated International Youth Day (IYD) in Soroti District. The event, which highlighted the pivotal role of youth in sustainable development, was honored by the presence of His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the Ambassador of Denmark, representing EU development partners in Uganda. Key participants included UN agencies led by Resident Coordinator Ms. Susan Namondo, the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development (MGLSD) and the National Youth Council, and Naguru Teenage Centre.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 International Youth Day, first designated by the UN General Assembly in 1999, celebrates the critical roles young people play in driving change and addressing challenges for sustainable development. This year's event aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, emphasizing the need to equip youth with skills that are essential for their growth and contribution to society.

This year’s theme, "Skills Development for Enhancement of Youth Opportunities," underscored the importance of providing young people with the tools they need to thrive. The theme aligns with the global push to harness young people's potential for a sustainable future. It emphasizes that supporting access to education and skills, especially for rural youth and those in remote areas, is crucial for improving their economic opportunities and sustainable livelihoods.During the commemoration, Ms. Susan Namondo, Resident Coordinator of UN agencies in Uganda, emphasized the need for innovations and entrepreneurship to unlock youth potential. She stated, “We must strengthen the ecosystem of support for innovation and entrepreneurship by establishing deliberate networks and support funds for new businesses.” Namondo also highlighted the importance of providing quality education and involving youth in decision-making processes.H.E. Signe Winding Albjerg, Danish Ambassador to Uganda, representing the European Union, underscored the significance of investing in youth skills. “How we engage and empower young people today will define our nations' future. Their fresh perspectives and innovative ideas are crucial for progress and creativity,” she said.

Ms. Albjerg reaffirmed the EU Delegation and Member States’ commitment to empowering youth, recognizing their potential to drive transformation in their communities.

A highlight of the pre-event activities was a football match organized by UNFPA in partnership with MGLSD, the National Youth Council, and Naguru Teenage Centre. Featuring youth from the Teso region, the match symbolized unity and the vibrant energy of Uganda’s youth. Beyond showcasing sportsmanship, the event also served as a platform to raise awareness about sexual and reproductive health.

UNFPA commends the government for its leadership and support towards youth through various programs and initiatives in collaboration with partners. However, these efforts must be scaled up to reach those who are most disadvantaged. Youth are the resource and backbone on which the country must rely to advance sustainable development and generate innovative solutions. We call on all stakeholders to join us in amplifying these efforts, ensuring that every young person in Uganda has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to a prosperous future.
