Kampala, Uganda, June 12, 2017 – Representative Alain Sibenaler led a delegation of UNFPA Uganda Staff to make a courtesy call on the First Lady of the Republic of Uganda, Mrs. Janet Kataaha Museveni, to discuss maternal and adolescent health.

Through Organisation of African First Ladies against AIDS (OAFLA) Uganda Chapter, the First Lady is championing programmes on Safe Motherhood, the national campaign for the Elimination of Mother-to –Child Transmission of HIV (EMTCT), and the national Adolescent Health programme. She is also the patron of the recently established Parliamentary Champion’s Forum on Maternal Health, where Members of Parliament conduct consultations and develop resolutions on how to improve maternal health in Uganda.

The First Lady, also the Minister of Education and Sports, thanked Mr. Sibenaler for the seamless continuation of the work that was started by his predecessor, Ms. Esperance Fundira.

“We have always worked very closely with the UN,” She said.

Mr. Sibenaler, who started work in UNFPA Uganda in March 2017 said that he takes the Uganda mission as a privilege, at a time when the country has had many results in the area of maternal health and HIV prevention that are being recognized globally.

“We are also pleased to note that the Government of Uganda, led by the Ministry of Education is about to launch the National Framework on Sexuality Education,” noted Mr. Sibenaler. “It all starts with keeping girls in school, by giving them the right information to empower them.”

The First Lady noted that her Ministry is almost finalizing the National Framework on Sexuality Education, which will be implemented under the Presidential Initiative for AIDS Strategy for Communication to Youth.

Mr. Sibenaler lead the team from UNFPA that included Ms. Miranda Tabifor, UNFPA Deputy Representative; Dr. Edson Muhwezi, UNFPA Assistant Representative; Ms. Roselidah Odeko, Senior GBV Coordinator; Ms. Rosemary Kindyomunda, Programme Specialist HIV/AIDS; Ms. Christine Kajungu, Programme Analyst Reproductive Health; and Ms. Prossy Nakanjako, Communications and Partnerships Officer.
